Let the breakfast making begin!

The steps:

  • First, heat a skillet over medium high heat and add your olive oil. You can also use butter if you tolerate dairy.
  • Once the oil sizzles when you put a drop of water in it, carefully crack your egg directly in the center of the oil.
  • Let the egg sit there and cook for a minute, until the egg white starts to become white and more solidified. Once it does, tilt the pan and carefully spoon some of the oil over the top of the egg. Do this several times to get the egg white and the egg yolk.
  • When the egg is cooked to your liking, sprinkle some salt and pepper on top.
  • Toast a piece of bread in your toaster.
  • When it’s done, cut a heart shape out of the center, either with a cookie cutter, or just free handing it with a knife. Save the heart shaped piece.
  • Take the egg off the pan and slide it onto a cutting board. Cut a heart shape out of the egg, keeping the yolk in the center as much as possible- again you can do this with either a cookie cutter or by hand.
  • Place the toast on a plate, and then transfer the egg into the heart shaped hole in the toast.
  • Add some jelly to the heart shaped piece you cut out of the toast and serve it on the side! Enjoy!

Substitutions:

  • You can use your favorite bread for this recipe. I like using homemade sourdough sandwich bread, but you can also use gluten free bread to make this gluten free.
  • Feel free to add some hot sauce or other seasonings to your egg.
  • You can also add butter to the toast after it’s cooked, if you tolerate dairy.
  • Butter, bacon fat, avocado oil, or another oil would work great for frying the egg, in place of the olive oil.

Recommended kitchen items:

  • I used a heart shaped cookie cutter that I got from Walmart years and years ago, so I don’t have a link. There tend to be a lot at stores around Valentine’s Day!
  • Matte gold silverware set. I absolutely love using this gold silverware to make things extra fancy. Are they necessary? No. But, they’re beautiful and fun.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 egg
  • salt to taste
  • cracked pepper to taste
  • 1 piece sourdough bread
  • strawberry jam optional

Instructions

  • *Quick note: feel free to scale this recipe for as many people as you'd like to make it for! 1 egg and 1 piece of bread per person works well.*
  • Heat a skillet to medium high heat and add your olive oil.
  • Once the oil is hot enough to sizzle when you put a drop of water in it, carefully crack you egg into the pan, trying to keep it from spreading too much.

  • Once your egg is cooked enough to your liking, turn the heat off and sprinkle some salt and pepper on top.
  • Toast a piece of bread. (You can optionally butter your toast once it's done)
  • Cut a heart shape out of the center of the toast, either with a cookie cutter or a knife, and reserve the heart shape you took out.
  • Transfer your egg to a cutting board and cut a heart shape out of it, doing your best to center the egg yolk.
  • Place your toast on a plate, and slide the egg into the heart shaped hole.
  • Spread some strawberry jam (or another fruit jam) onto the reserved heart shaped piece of toast, and serve that on the side. Enjoy!
